Cornell introduces real plates in dining for the first time

‘It’s so much harder to steal food from the dining hall now’

Returning from Fall Break late on Tuesday, Cornell freshmen were greeted by reusable dishware and cutlery in the dining halls, a first for the class of 2020.

Previously, Cornell eateries featured paper plates and bowls and plastic cups and tableware, in an effort to save water in this time of drought. This return to actual plates and utensils has been met with mixed reviews.

Some, like Neha Kaul, freshman in the College of Human Ecology, considers this change a good thing.

“It’s a little weird, but it’s nice. I had gotten used to using the paper plates, but it felt really environmentally wasteful. These new plates make Cornell seem more like home, you know less like we’re leaving soon.”

Others, like Cayla Hamann, freshman in the College of Engineering, are not so optimistic. “I really liked the disposable dishes. They were super convenient, and I had just gotten used to the paper and plastic. It doesn’t super matter though.”

Another freshman, who prefers to remain anonymous, is not at all pleased: “It’s so much harder to steal food from the dining hall now. I’m going to have to get a lot sneakier.”
