Yawkey Center evacuated this morning after ‘emergency in building’

‘These things always happen’

Alarms throughout the Yawkey Center and Baystate Dining Hall started going off around 8:50am this morning, forcing hungry students and those wanting to get out of class to leave the building.

A dining hall worker said it was started by an accident in the kitchen, filling the area with smoke. Everyone evacuated and the fire department came and went within 20 minutes.

According to Shuyi, a CAS sophomore, “these things always happen and it was cleared up in less than 15 minutes.”

One student said her class was dismissed after the alarm went off. The announcement said “May I have your attention please, an emergency has been detected in the building. Please evacuate using the stairs.” She added that students were running out of the dining hall, holding on to food.

The only evidence left to show something took place is the alarm still going off in the back entrance of the building.
