No one knows who BU’s Class of 2016 commencement speaker is

It’s not Shia LaBeouf

Boston University announced this year’s commencement speaker at the Senior Breakfast Monday morning. On May 15th, Nina Tassler will deliver the class’ commencement address on Nickerson Field.

Don’t know who Nina Tassler is?

You are not alone.

Many graduating students have voiced their confusion -and frustrations- on social media, and especially on Twitter.

Nina Tassler, a graduate of CFA in 1979, is also a BU trustee. She is a former chairman for CBS, but started as a vice president of CBS Productions’ drama department. She helped bring about the CSI and NCIS franchises and was named president of the network in 2004.

Some students wish that Travis Roy, one of the recipients of an honorary degree, was the speaker instead of Tassler. Roy was a member of BU’s men’s hockey team in 1995. During his first game, he suffered a spinal injury and has since established the Travis Roy Foundation, which has raised over six million dollars for spinal cord research and assistance for people with spinal cord injuries. Roy graduated BU in 2000.

Throughout all of this, though, perhaps the most frustrating thing is learning who is speaking at colleges across the Charles River or even down a few streets. Steven Spielberg will speak at Harvard, Matt Damon at MIT, Hank Azaria at Tufts, and Senator Elizabeth Warren and National YMCA President and CEO Kevin Washington will speak at Suffolk College.
