BU created an educational course on sexual assault

The course addresses the many forms of sexual assault, including sexual harassment, stalking, and abuse in relationships

On March 16th, Ken Elmore sent out an email with information regarding a new sexual assault education course, known as Stand Up, Speak Out.

Dean Elmore worked with faculty and students to put together the course – so far 26 student groups have been approved. The course addresses the many forms of sexual assault, including sexual harassment, stalking, and abuse in relationships.

According to Elmore’s email, the course was created to help, “Ensur[e] that we maintain a safe and supportive environment.”

Throughout the course there are true/false and multiple choice questions to test your knowledge. Example situations are provided and there are links to more information throughout.

Some of the questions include:

  • Have you had sex or touched someone in a sexual way who is a sleep, passed out or incapacitated?
  • Attempted to control your partners behavior, mood or actions by threats or coercion?
  • Coerced someone to have sex with you?
  • Hit, pushed or threatened to hit, thrown things or punched at or near your partner?

Towards the end of the course, there are resources available for survivors of sexual assault of any kind, including BU’ Sexual Assault Response and Prevention Center (617-353-7277), BU’s Behavioral Medicine (617-353-3569), BU’s Marsh Chapel (617-353-3560), and Office of the Ombuds (617-358-5960).

There is also information included for anyone who needs to report assault, whether it is for his/herself or for a friend.

The course is fast and easy to get through, so it is worth it to take a few minutes out of your time to review the information, if not for yourself, but for a friend if they are ever in need.
