Meet BU designer Amin Adjmi, fashion’s next big thing
You need these shirts in your closet
While most students are stressing and preparing for midterms, Amin Adjmi, 20, is preparing for the launch of his Fall/Winter 2015 collection.
The Brooklyn native started his clothing company, Staycoolnyc, this past summer and is already getting publicity from online clothing blogs.
We chatted to sophomore Amin of the fashion world about his brand and how he got started.
Amin said: “I’ve always been into fashion, but it also always felt like something was missing. I could rep a clothing brand and rep something that someone else designed, but I wanted to create something on my own, something that people would love to wear.”
In the past, Amin worked for a vintage clothing store in NYC called Mr. Throwback which inspired his love for retro-style fashion.
“I took a little bit of everything I learned from the fashion industry and put it into my designs. All of the designs that I came up with and will be coming out with are all inspired from past clothing brands and things I wear, with my own flare to it.”
The SHA undergrad characterizes his retro streetwear as “Chillwear.”
“I want the person who wears my shirt to be able to throw it on at any time, whether to hang out with friends, go for a drive, or to sleep in — I want the customer to feel good and comfortable in their shirt. You don’t have to think too hard to throw it on.”
The clothing isn’t in-your-face or flashy. It’s a balance of clean and exciting graphics that are also relevant enough for both men and women to wear and appreciate and is the new thing among teenaged and college-aged guys and girls.
Finding the time to balance schoolwork and the brand didn’t come easily for the rising Class of ’18 designer.
“I was a bit overwhelmed the first few weeks when I came back to school, my mind was always on it [the company]. Usually what I do now is get all of my work done after class, then go straight to manage my social media account, finding celebs and models to rep my brand.”
Amin’s routine seems to be working for him so far as models from across the nation have supported his company, gaining him publicity.
“I recommend if someone has a passion for something, they should just go for it and not worry so much about balancing the work because if they love it, it will come naturally.”
Amin gets his inspiration from vintage and retro clothing that he comes across, but his biggest style influence has always been Tyler, The Creator.
“I’m a huge fan of his style and attitude, and they’re really what pushed me to just go for it and design my own brand.
“He always says to fuck what people think and that you got to have confidence in anything you rep. It’s really all about confidence.
“I want the person wearing my shirt to not only feel dope, but know they look dope when repping Staycoolnyc.”
