BREAKING: Elections Committee will not re-open UGBC race to new candidates

They view the two running teams as legitimate contenders

After Elizabeth and Joe’s withdrawal from the UGBC elections, they called for the Elections Committee to re-open nominations to new candidates, specifically Joe Arquillo and Niki Patel.

We spoke with junior International Studies major Adam Rosenbloom, Co-Chair of the Elections Committee, about the current status of the UGBC elections.

He said: “As everyone knows, or should know, Elizabeth Foley and Joey McCarthy have dropped out of the election due to personal reasons.

“So because of that, we now have two teams running, one is Olivia Hussey and the other is Anthony Perasso.

“With that said, Elizabeth’s past campaign manager Joe Arquillo submitted an appeal to the Elections Committee to essentially enable him and a running mate to run for President as a third team.

“And he gave us multiple reasons for why – the most important argument he had, I think, was he argued that the Perasso campaign isn’t taking the election seriously and that they are essentially running a satire.

“And because of that, he thinks [there should be] third team so that it is an actually competitive election.

“The committee met last night and we decided not to let him run because for us – on our end – we have to maintain an unbiased view of all the campaign teams, as well as staying as ethical as possible and sticking to our code, we can’t evaluate the content of the Perasso campaign.

“Doing so would imply that there isn’t valid candidacy or anything like that, and we can’t make that bias judgment. That’s really the job of the student body.

“And because of that, we decided to not let him run because on our end, we see both teams, as well as Perasso as serious candidates.

“We likewise brought this up to Anthony Perasso and he said he was taking it as seriously and we have to take it as face value because that’s not our role in the election.

“As of now, we don’t plan – the Elections Committee – does not plan to void our vote and open up the elections at this point.

“Joe, though, is welcome to appeal our decision. He has that right.”

Update: Joe and Niki have appealed the decision and are calling for another vote of the Elections Committee.
