Why Alabama football game days are so special

It’s more than just Dixieland Delight

We all know Alabama fans are obsessed with their football. It’s more than just a sport to us, and we love everything about it. It’s something we look forward to all year round.

If you don’t go to Alabama, I know it probably sounds dumb to you. But until you experience the rush of being in Bryant-Denny as Dixieland Delight comes on over the speakers and 100,000 of your fellow diehard Crimson Tide fans scream the extra verses in unison, you can’t knock it.

Just watch this video – if you don’t get the chills, then you’re either not human or you just hate sports:

It’s more than just Dixieland Delight, though. Game days are by far some of the best memories I have made here at UA. Our tailgates, camaraderie and our drinks all make game days in Tuscaloosa something to put on your bucket list.

Our tailgates are insane. They range from single family tents to entire organizations who have several tents. If you walk through the Quad on a game day, you’ll more than likely get offered free food, drinks or shakers. We’re all a big family and we all want everyone to have the best game day ever. Every time.

The camaraderie is insane. For instance, on one game day, I met a random couple on the street outside of the stadium. They asked me to take a picture of them, and of course I obliged. (And I took a damn good picture if you ask me.)

But it didn’t end there. We ended up talking for a good 10 minutes until I eventually snapped a picture with one of the women.

Look how happy we are

This is not a rare occurrence. I have taken several similar pictures with complete strangers. Maybe I’m just friendly, but everyone seems to be pretty friendly on game days.

Our drinks are insane. They’re honestly just as amazing as our people. If you don’t really know anyone to tailgate with or don’t feel comfortable mooching off others, then you can go to Gallettes and get Yellow Hammered. In order to do this, you have to drink Yellow Hammers. They’re a combination of rum, vodka, amaretto, pineapple and orange juice.

Or if you’re on a college budget, you can buy all of the Four Loko flavors and mix them in a vase to share among friends, like so.

It is so good. I promise. Don’t judge.

Game days are also the best time for family and friends. You get to have an amazing time with the people you are closest to. This is where everyone gets to meet each other’s parents.

Sure, it’s awkward at times, but if you’re lucky, you get to spend an awesome week with them in Dallas. Not all because of game day, of course, but it does play a part in it for sure.

September 10th can’t come soon enough. RMFT!
