Why Roanoke, VA is hands down the best hometown

No, not the Lost Colony

Anyone who grew up in Roanoke, Virginia, knows it has its ups and downs. Its beauty is something you never really appreciate until you leave and realize nowhere else really matches up.

Surrounded by the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, Roanoke is a valley filled with southern hospitality, quaint neighborhoods and amazing locals. If you’ve had the opportunity to visit this expanding city, you probably left a little piece of your soul there.

This is why growing up in Roanoke was the best thing to ever happen to me.

Roanoke is the Star City of the South

Literally, there is a giant star shining over it.

With its 88.5 foot height looming over the town, it’s hard to miss. It’s not only beautiful to look at from below, the view from the top is stunning as well.

The community is close-knit and supportive

News broadcast about Kendall Bayne

If you’ve lived anywhere near Roanoke, you’ll know the story of Kendall Bayne, which is quite possibly the best example of a community backing one of its citizens you’ll ever hear.

The small businesses are unbelievable

With privately owned shops like Pop’s Ice Cream and Soda Bar (world’s best grilled cheese), Bubble Cake (out of this world cupcakes), 419 West and a ton of others, you’re never without a good place to eat.

The beauty is breathtaking

Roanoke is surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains, so the beauty is endless. I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves.

With mountains comes activity

The mountains aren’t just good for the eyes. They are equally as amazing for the heart, soul and body. With tons of hiking trails and falls – McAfee Knob and The Cascades being the most popular – you’ll never be bored on a summer day out of school.

Downtown is expanding, but still adorable

Little things make downtown Roanoke adorable, but best of all is the farmers market. With farmers selling organic items from their own farms, it’s easy to understand why this community is so close. The people are amazing. The new art museum and new businesses have also made downtown a must see.

Last but not least, The Homeplace

The Homeplace

The Homeplace is the definition of southern cooking. While technically in Catawba, there is no explaining the joys of living in Roanoke without The Homeplace. The home turned restaurant was built in 1907 and still stands on acres of farmland surrounded by mountains.

This is the perfect place to replace all the calories you burned off hiking Dragons Tooth, as it’s a 10-minute drive from the trail. With options like ham, turkey, mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, sweet tea and cobbler, you’ll be in a delicious food coma after eating here. Just make sure you’re early – there is always a wait.
