What should you wear to your interview? The ultimate guide to professional attire

How to dress to impress

job interview

You got an interview for an internship or job, which is fantastic! Now you just have to figure out what you're supposed to wear. It's almost as nerve-wrecking as the actual interview prep. No worries because we've broken down how to dress so you land the job.

Not every interview warrents the same outfit. You should tailor what you wear to fit the industry you're planning on working in. A finance major entering the business world shouldn't be walking into an interview in the same outfit as a graphic designer. You should always be dressed a level above what you expect your interviewer to wear.

It shows them you take the position seriously and professionally. We've split things up by industry and then by men and women so you can find something in your closet that works! If you don't think you've got some stuff that works, buy a few basic pieces that can be dressed up or down depending on the position.

Finance

This is the interview where you should be wearing a full suit. Guys, that means slacks, button-down shirt, blazer, tie, and lace-up shoes. It's not a bad idea to get your shoes shined beforehand too. Ladies, we'd recommend going with either a pant or skirt suit and sensible heels. Nothing too high or showy. We'd stay away from any bright colors or wild patterns on shirts or ties. Suits should be in the navy or grey realm.

You should still look professional, but you defintely don't need to go all out. For the guys, we'd go with slacks and a classic button-down. Do your research on the company ahead of time and that should give you a hint on whether or not a blazer is necessary. The girls can show a bit more of their personality with their clothes here. We'd go with a simple dress or skirt and blouse combo. You can experiment with some brighter colors, but don't go too wild. We'd stick with something like a royal blue or pattern that wasn't too busy. Ballet flats totally work in this situation or a sensible pair of heels.

Fashion

It doesn't matter if you're a guy or girl. If you're interviewing for a fashion job, it's all about being on trend. Show off your personal style and prove to interviewer that you've your fashion knowledge on lock. We still wouldn't recommend showing off too much skin or anything too outrageous. Before you leave your dorm, look yourself over in the mirror and take off an accessory or two so the emphasis is on you and not your six statement bracelets.

This is all about striking a balance between being comfortable and still coming across as professional. This industry tends to be relaxed, but you should try to go a step above. We'd go with slacks or dark jeans if you think you can swing it. Look like a pro with a button-down or nice blouse. Bring a blazer and accessorize just a little bit to show off your personality.

Tech

The dress code for tech is fairly similar to the creative industry. Your interviewer could very well be in jeans and a sweatshirt, but that doesn't mean you should show up in the same. We'd go with dark wash jeans and button-up for the men then dark jeans (not too skinny) with a nice blouse for women. You can probably get away with some slightly different shoes for this one. Think booties and boots if you're not feeling classic lace-up/ballet flat route, but we'd avoid going too casual with your beat-up Converse.
