An honor student was suspended, banned from graduation and threatened with arrest — for wearing this shirt

Seeing a ridiculous dress code “violation” go big on Facebook is (unfortunately) a pretty standard occurrence, especially as we creep into hot summer months. This, though, is ridiculous even by conservative standards.

A high school senior in Harrisburg, North Carolina identified only as Summer spoke to local news outlets about a dress code incident that’s all but totally ruined her last few weeks of school, and threatened to affect her even post-grad.

Detailed in her school’s suspension notice, the school principal confronted Summer about her long-sleeve top, picture above, and told her to cover up with a jacket.

The report reads Summer replied, “I think my shirt is fine” (girl, same). The notice alleges the student’s back was exposed, so the principal again ordered her to cover up, so Summer’s friend loaned her a jacket to appease the administrator.

“I pulled it up, put the jacket over it, zipped up the jacket,” Summer said to WKYC, thinking that would be the end of the incident, but the principal told her to go into the school control room to change entirely. “I completely understand why a dress code is put into place but I feel like after I put on that jacket it should have been subdued,” Summer said.

When she was once again ordered to go change, she remained seated and requested that administrators call her mother instead. “I said ‘I apologize, I can’t go anywhere with you unless my mom is called,” Summer explained. Lunch ended, and Summer made her way to the auditorium with her friends, until everyone was ordered out except for Summer.

“[The school police official] was within five feet of me, he had his hand on his gun,” Summer said. “[The principal] said ‘I’m gonna give you an ultimatum. We have tried to call your mother. You either come with me to the control room to change your shirt or we will arrest you.”

Summer said she remained in her seat and tried to call her mother once again, staying put as an act of civil disobedience. “I stayed in my seat just like a lot of role models that I have looked up to stayed in their seats,” she said. “I mean, you have to stand up for what you believe in.”

Though Summer said the principal issued an order to begin the arrest, her mother called back before she could be handcuffed.

Summer was issued a 10-day suspension and is not to attend any senior activities — including her graduation ceremony, despite her 4.4 GPA and full-ride scholarship to a university.

A spokesperson for the school district declined comment to any news outlet, citing student privacy.

Local outlet WKYC reports 45 students at Hickory Ridge High were sent to the principal’s office for wearing leggings with shirts that were deemed too short.

Right now, Summer’s concern is on her full academic scholarship now in jeopardy as she claims her school principal is still considering expulsion.
