Why does everyone suddenly love Kristen Stewart now that she’s ‘out’?

She’s always been edgy but now that she’s dating women, it’s apparently acceptable?

Until recent, liking Kristen Stewart was equivalent to trying to request Chad Kroeger and Santana’s “Into The Night” at the bar — so why are we all suddenly obsessed with her now that she’s open about her sexuality?

Though she has done basically nothing controversial outside cheating on Rob P with director Rupert Sanders (not that cheating is okay but literally damn, Rupert), she still managed to place number two on The Cut’s most hated Hollywood celeb list in 2013. And looking back, that’s pretty fucked up considering how we still revere Jude Law and Brad Pitt (still unconfirmed whether he cheated but if he did…) after their alleged affairs were reported.

Aside from her scandal, we called her unapproachable garbage for not smiling enough, and deemed her a bad actress despite her breakout roles in Adventureland, The Runaways—and let’s not forget her unforgettable performance in the #TBT banger The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas:

The so-dubbed K-Stew’s got talent, but that wasn’t enough for us. No — she deserved to be on a list with Chris Brown, a literal abuser, and Justin Bieber, who that year was spotted pissing in a mop bucket inside a night club kitchen and assaulting a tour manager.

Then 2014 happened, and she was reportedly dating Alicia Cargile. And then, after an on-and-off romance, she moved on to French singer and musician SoKo later in 2016. Suddenly, everyone was singing her praises.

Hmmm

It’s almost like…just one thing has changed?

BuzzFeed and MTV both posted on why we should all just love Stewart while Complex made a case for why she has transitioned from the most hated to most beloved in Hollywood, all around the time she made her first official statement to Elle UK about dating a woman: “Right now I’m just really in love with my girlfriend.”

Coincidence?

Perhaps we had a change of heart simply because she stopped worrying about what other people thought about her—she made that clear once she started dressing like a rock star and unfolded more of her guarded personality to reveal she actually is “funny and fiercely open.”

Or, perhaps our expectations of ‘straight’ Stewart just weren’t being met. She wasn’t showing up on the red carpet with a glowing smile, she wasn’t joining girl squads and she definitely wasn’t jumping at the chance to be interviewed about what she was wearing.

Mostly, she clearly wasn’t a natural at living in the spotlight. In fact, it was a longtime dream of hers to direct films. Absence of these traits doesn’t add up to a ‘typical’ Hollywood actress, let alone a hetero Hollywood actress, and that frustration was just being taken out on her, despite that she was just trying to live life on her own terms. And all along, she had the right to just that.

It’s no secret that we put a lot of pressure on Hollywood women to be able to handle it all sans scandal with a smile on their face, but the moment she starts dating women and dressing the way she truly wants to, her attitude is now acceptable? Clearly, we have some soul-searching to do, society.

Her more recent SNL appearance proved that not only is she funny AF, but she especially gives no fucks about how her gayness may be perceived, and we have to admit, we give her big ups for her unapologetic fearlessness — not that she needs our approval.
