I tried crazy home remedies to get rid of blackheads

There were a few that worked miracles

I am and always have been one of those people who is cursed with extreme pore blockage. I rarely ever have a pimple and don’t even own coverup, but I get blackheads like it’s my job. I get semi-regular facials, but I am always up to try (literally) anything to get rid of some of my blackheads. After scouring the internet for remedies to get rid of the tiny face blockers, so I decided to try them and see if they worked.

Egg white mask/pore strip

This remedy said to rinse your face and then apply a thin layer of egg white onto your blackhead-stricken area. I then applied a piece of tissue over the egg white and waited for it to try. The article said to use cotton strips but I didn’t have any so I improvised.

My lovely egg whites

Yes, I look ridiculous, I know

When it did (kind of) dry, I applied another layer of egg white and let that dry. Then I stripped off the tissue and rinsed my face off. The tissue was not strong enough and a bunch came off on my face when I tried to remove it. I rinsed it off, but I didn’t notice much difference in my blackheads.

Honey and milk pore strip

The directions said to mix one tablespoon of organic honey and one teaspoon of milk but I just eyeballed it. It also said to heat it up, but I don’t have a microwave in my apartment so I just let it be room temperature. As with the egg whites, I applied a thin layer to my nose and chin and then placed a tissue over it. It said to let dry for 20 minutes but I did it for 10 which was about the time it took to make my face feel tight (as it should) because ain’t nobody got time for that.

To be honest, I feel as though this concoction was counterproductive. When I removed the sticky tissue, my pores and face felt worse. I immediately washed my face to get it off and clear out my pores. My review: this one sucks.

Cinnamon and honey Strip

Same shit, different ingredients. I mixed honey with cinnamon and applied it to my face, but this time with a pore strip instead of a tissue, since that clearly didn’t work. The directions said to let it sit for three to five minutes so I did it for seven to be safe.

NOT PLEASED

It was quite possibly the dumbest thing I have ever done. All it did was make my face sticky and spill honey down my nose. COMPLETELY ineffective.

Sweat it out

The article said that breaking a good sweat can help clear your blackheads because when you work up enough of a sweat, the liquid naturally flows over and softens/flushes anything clogging your pores. I immediately called BS because I work out all the time but I decided to REALLY, REALLY make myself sweat and see if dripping like I came out of a pool would do the trick. It also said that you have to wash your face immediately before and after you sweat, so maybe that’s where I was going wrong.

When I got home from work I immediately took of my makeup which would inevitable be dripping down my face, got into gym clothes and splashed my face with water. I then began to work out. I pushed myself really hard with all the at-home workouts I could think of, from burpees to jumping jacks to side planks to squats. I worked up a nice sweat.

Clearly sweaty!

Then, once I became hangry and tired, I splashed my face with water again. I was very, very surprised at the difference I saw. This sure did work.

BEFORE

AFTER

I’m not sure if you can really see the difference, but I definitely did. The honey and milk one really messed me up, but this one cleaned all that crap right out! I recommend this method.

Baking soda and water

This one said to just mix the two ingredients, massage them into your face like a face wash and then rinse. Pretty simple. However, I had a tiny issue with making the mix. I used way too much water, so I ended up having to pour a ton of baking soda in to create the paste. Then, when I began to apply it, I needed way less than I had made to cover my blackhead-stricken areas. I didn’t want to waste 10 pounds of baking soda, so I applied the paste to the rest of my face because why not?

I left it on for about two minutes. I got a sort-of strong tingle on my nose (which is the area of my face with the most blackheads), but I figured that was a good thing. The rest of my face felt cool. When I washed it off and looked at my face, I couldn’t spot one blackhead. They had shrunk completely. It was amazing. I got into the shower and washed my face with a daily scrub just in case. Once I got out of the shower, I checked again. I could now see some of them but both my chin and nose looked way less blocked up than before. In fact, my entire face felt extremely clean – the way you feel after exiting a facial. I highly recommend this treatment.

Cleansing sugar rub

The article said to mix four tablespoons of oil into one cup of sugar, stirring until everything is fully incorporated and then to add several drops of essential oil for fragrance if you like (which I didn’t). It said to store it in a cool dark place in a glass jar, but I just popped it in the fridge in tupperware. It also said to stir before using and then to wet your face, scoop some scrub onto your fingertips, and massage it over your skin in circular motions.

Look closely

I was skeptical considering the oil, but it did actually make a small difference. And my face was super smooth afterwards. I washed it with a skin penetrating face wash afterwards just in case. For those with very dry skin, this is a good choice.

There are a few that are continuous:

Lemon Toner

Squeeze lemon juice and a little bit of water into a bottle and store in the fridge. Apply via cotton ball three to four times a week (it does sting sometimes). I did this a few times throughout the week. I feel like it made a bit of a difference, but I’m not completely sure. It probably works long-term though.

H2O Daily Treatment

I did this every day because it’s way less intense for your pores. All you have to do is splash water on your face and then dab it dry with a towel. I tend to rinse my face every night, so I didn’t think I would see much of a difference. The article recommended splashing your face twice a day – either morning and night or afternoon and night so I did it in the morning, too. I did see results. After doing it just once in the morning, my face was way less oily all day and since oil contributes heavily to blackheads, I knew it was an effective method.
