Derwent Rugby are once again sporting terrible facial hair for Movember

They’re smashing last year’s total and doing what they do best, downing pints and upping the ‘tache game

Derwent Rugby are certainly punching above their weight, yet again, in the amount of money they have raised this November.

With only 40 members, they are currently in the top 20 for rugby teams in the UK, out of over 150, raising more than professional teams such as Saracens and have raised the most out of any of York’s sports teams.

winners of last year's college varsity!!

They have raised more than £2,000 so far, and have blasted past last year’s total of £1,578.

We spoke to the DCRUFC Captain, Charlie Innes, who told The York Tab: "We thought it would be a real challenge to raise as much as last year, however we sailed past it within 15 days, which is a great effort from the boys. Even though you can’t tell the majority of the team are taking part in Movember, it’s great to see the club make a real difference to causes that are close to many of the player’s hearts."

Irrespective of the amounts raised, the causes are fantastic. Alongside raising money for testicular and prostate cancer, the money raised goes towards fighting suicide amongst young men.

Mental health has become a growing issue within universities in the UK, something that needs tackling. 60 per cent of suicides are young men, and as the Derwent rugby lads team up with Movember, together they looking to reduce male suicide by 25 per cent come 2030.

A special mention has to go out to Alex "Rusty" Andrews for raising over £250, all whilst looking practically clean shaven compared to Robin Kear, who shaved his beard of several years just for this month.

The boys are far from done, growing out their questionable facial hair and, with under two weeks away, are also far from done raising money for this fantastic cause – you can donate here.
