Students targeted in knifepoint robberies near Cannon Park

It happened on a popular cut-through for University of Warwick students

It has been reported that two students were robbed at knifepoint whilst walking through a prevalent shortcut in Coventry.

The path connects Shultern Lane and Cannocks Lane in Cannon Park, running around the back of Canley Crematorium. The route is habitually used by University of Warwick students, as well as other pedestrians and dog walkers.

Posters have been placed at both entrances to the passageway, stating “Do NOT go down this lane on your own. Two students were robbed at knifepoint on Friday.”

Police state that they have received two reports of robberies along the route; the first was on Friday, December 9th when a bag was taken from a man in his 20s at the entrance to Shultern Lane.

However, officers say that they are currently unclear as to whether threats were made or if a weapon was produced during the robbery.

The second robbery occurred on Sunday, December 11th, also in Shultern Lane. It occurred at approximately 10:40am and involved a 24 year old woman who was threatened and robbed, who was fortunately left uninjured.

Local neighbourhood police sergeant Jo Comer said: “We are ramping up our patrol plans with additional high-visibility officers deployed at key times in affected areas, and an investigation is underway to identify the offender.

“We are aware of the posters and decided there is no reason why they can’t stay in place: They offer sound crime prevention and personal safety advice, namely urging people to stick to busier, well-lit areas after dark and to walk together in secluded areas.

“The local police team, investigation officers, Coventry City Council and Warwick University are working together to ensure that this part of Coventry remains a safe place to live, work and study.”

Peter Dunn, spokesman for University of Warwick, said, “We are aware of the incidents and are working closely with police, and are very pleased with their response.

“These incidents are not something we have ever experienced before in this intensity and are an aberration that the police are dealing with to help make our students, and everyone else in the community, safe.”
