Circling, sharking and Disco Dave: A standard evening at Copper Rooms

Warwick’s very own alternative to a legal high

The only place on campus where you can get Purple and wet on the same night, the Copper Rooms night out is an integral part of Warwick. There are a few recurring themes that keep cropping up. From Playlist to Pop, to School Dayz, here are few thing you may recognise.

Hoover floor

In The Copper Rooms, ‘dropped’ may mean ‘lost forever’. If you let your phone slip out of your hand, the only way to retrieve it is to dive to the bottom of whatever shit mosh-pit you’re in, and try to peel it away from the Purple-coated floor. Good luck. If you’re a girl, your friends might be nice and try to form a sort of barrier around you whilst you scramble on your knees,  with a concerned ‘when will my husband return from war?’ look on their face. If you’re a boy however, chances are your mates will use this opportunity to bundle in and drown you in their angry fist pumping. Your call.

Frantically trying to throw a costume together

I don’t know what it is about The Copper Rooms, but they always inspire the most creative parts of the Warwick student. Whether it’s skin tight lycra, cardboard boxes or debauched school kids, the Copper Rooms has seen it all. The girls normally looking fabulous, and the boys like the car crash orgy they’ll feel like in the morning.

Sharking on the dance floor

Speaking of the boys, they come in packs, hunting from the bars to the smoking areas. From the sweet and innocent looking who genuinely wouldn’t hurt a fly, to the dead behind the eyes, gliding like the Great White Sharks of School Dayz. A fairly gloomy picture, but I’m glad the girls bring some class into this arrangement. From the siren call of drunken screeching, to the harmonic sound of chunder hitting the bathroom floor, it’s no surprise these lovely ladies are so ferociously sought after.

Circling

No no…No no no…..No Daddy….Daddy….DADDY NO!! No need to call the police, it’s just American Football starting off their circle with a game of Roman Numerals. It’s Wednesday at Warwick and the campus is alive, crawling with cats, dogs, cops, robbers, Disney princesses and lads in red chinos. There’s a humming in the distance, a melodic synergy of drinking chants.  Yes, the joys that are Circling – part bonding exercise, part foreplay, always hilarious, and no night in the Copper Rooms is complete without this traditional Warwick ritual.

Horrific dancing

There must be something in the air as you enter the SU that brings out all variety of terrible and yet unwaveringly confident dance moves. Once you get further than the second pillars, anything goes, although usually this ends up being the classic, err, ‘jumping up and down’… Groovy.

Disco Dave

The man. The myth. The legend. Returning week after week with his crowd-pleasing selection of last month’s UK Top 40. What higher privilege is there than having your #warwickpop tweet projected on the screen beside him?

Some of the best memories

Despite being a laser-lit catalyst that brings out the worst in everyone, we still adore the Copper Rooms, and if you’re drunk enough and with the right people, they’re some of the best nights at uni.
