Warwick student suspended as Labour councillor due to Anti-Semitic Tweets

She called Hitler the ‘greatest man in history’

Third year Warwick student Aysegul Gurbuz has recently been suspended from her position as a Labour councillor after anti-semitic Tweets were found on her Twitter.

Alongside her studies at Warwick, where she also organises events for the Friends of Palestine society, Aysegul became Luton’s youngest councillor when she was elected last year.

However, she was suspended after it arose that she had written Tweets like “Hitler was the greatest man in history” and “Ed Miliband is Jewish, he will never become Prime Minister.”

She said: “It was a joint account I had with my sister so I don’t know if she’s gone out and Tweeted that, but I’m absolutely appalled right now.

“Where I live we’ve got very good cohesion with the Jewish community… I’m absolutely shocked.”

This apology aside, Jonathan Sacerdoti, from the Campaign Against Anti-Semitism, said: “These tweets are anti-Semitic. They appear on Aysegul Gurbuz’s personal account and there is no defence for that.

“Anti-Semitism is rising in Europe and the UK, and the regular anti-Semitic tweets and opinions emanating from the Labour Party have failed to elicit any meaningful response from Jeremy Corbyn. How many more cases must we see before Labour take action?”

Many of Labour’s senior Jewish MPs are currently raising awareness in regards to the shocking amounts of anti-semitic behaviour within the party, and this comes as another reminder that the desire to limit anti-semitic thought and behaviour within the party still needs work.

Jeremy Corbyn has stated he urges to tackle any Anti-Semitism within the party and investigate it fully.
