Meet the YouTube celebrities at Warwick

They make your 2:1 look pretty tame

At Warwick we get slightly excited when a BNOC sits opposite us in the Learning Grid or when we catch the same U1 as a Warwick Rower.

We’re all aware of the famous faces on campus, but we might not be familiar with the YouTube sensations walking amongst us.

Once associated with videos of animals falling over or the infamous “Charlie bit my finger”, the site is rapidly becoming the home of a new class of internet celebrity. People like Zoella might get the most hits, but Warwick has its fair share of famous bloggers too.

It’s no wonder students at Warwick are following in their footsteps. I was fortunate enough to catch up with three Warwick students who have jumped on the YouTube hype.

Arun Maini

Arun Maini is so much more than a second year economist. Going under the name MrWhoseTheBoss, Arun’s channel has drawn in over 100,000 subscribers. His videos, which feature reviews on the latest phones, gadgets and technology life hacks have been reported by mass newspaper sites such as The Daily Mail and The Mirror.

Arun modestly tells me the reason he started his channel was to help people with the technology problems in their life. Now, the largest technology companies, such as LG and Logitech are so keen for Arun’s review they make sure to send him their latest gadgets early.

The best part of YouTube fame? According to Arun it’s still the opportunity to connect and correspond with his viewers.

Roma Kayla Vichhi
Roma has managed to uphold a MORSE degree whilst also sustaining a successful YouTube channel. Her channel, originally centring on make-up tutorials, has now branched out into numerous other areas. Recent videos involve Roma sharing her study tips and advice on self-esteem to her 50,000 subscribers. Similarly to Arun, Roma humbly explains the best thing about her channel is being able to connect to her viewers, telling me how surprised she was when a viewer from America recently contacted her thanking her for the help she had provided. Plus, the free clothes and make up Roma receives is also a perk for any female student on a tight budget!

Jake Ward

Jake Ward is not your ordinary second year Physics student. Since before the beginning of university, Jake has been creating and uploading vlogs on a daily basis. Recently hitting his 500th vlog, Jake accredits his vlogging to massively increasing his confidence.

According to Jake, his vlogging is no different to those who keep a diary, just his diary contains public videos for the world to see. Unlike the rest of us students who graduate with a lot of blurry memories of the downstairs of Smack and missed 9am seminars, Jake has a virtual memory box that he can access at any time.
