Cathryn Turhan Is Our New President!

A new SU team has been voted in and Cathryn Turhan leads the way, as the first female President of the SU for nearly a decade.

Announced on Friday night, Cathryn Turhan showed that ‘experience counts’ as she purred her way to Presidency along with a whole new team behind. With a smile as large as a Cheshire Cat, Cathryn thanked everybody in a warm Facebook message moments after the election results came in:

“If you’d have asked me four years ago whether there was any chance I’d be running for SU president during my time at Warwick. I think I would have literally laughed in your face.

The thing is, I’m now a completely different person. I’m someone who is comfortable in who she is and confident in what she believes in. A person who is willing to say in front of senior members of university staff, or members of the community, that they’ve got it wrong. I’m a person who can properly listen to someone with real issues, and guide them through the right processes. A person who can really, truly lead a students’ union.

So I’m a girl, standing in front of a large cohort of students, saying, vote for this different person.”

She promises she won’t let you down.

Purrrfect: Cat was warmly accepted into the SU’s open arms.

Warwick’s very own Angela Merkel won an election that saw 5554 votes cast. The other winners were revealed as follows:

  • Education Officer: Maahwish Mirza
  • Postgraduate Officer: Andrew Thompson
  • Democracy and Development Officer: Rob Ankcorn
  • Welfare and Campaigns Officer: Bebe Husakova
  • Sports Officer: Ruby Compton-Davies
  • Societies Officer: Isaac Leigh

Winners of part time roles were also revealed:

  • Ethnic Minorities Officer: Cindy Asokan
  • LGBTUA+ Officer: Luke Dyson
  • Women’s Officer: Josie Throup
  • Disabled Students’ Officer: Jenny Wheeler
  • Environment and Ethics Officer: Dan Goss
  • Undergraduate Arts representative: Rosie Hiscock
  • Undergraduate Physics and Formal Sciences Representative: Michael Hobson
  • Undergraduate Engineering and Experimental Sciences Representative: Lai Kay Man
  • Undergratuate Social Sciences Representative: Miguel Costa Matos

The winners received huge support from an array of students across campus, but not everyone was pleased. An anonymous Sociology student revealed her dislike of the “posters over manifestos” strategy, that often appears sufficient to constitute a vote.

The Tab received exclusive photos from former SU President, Nick Swain. The party was in full swing in Aaron Bowater’s camp…

Nick Swain wrapped up the events of Friday night in one smooth sentence: “It was a great night and all the winners are very deserving they will love their year ahead and I wish them the best of luck!”

So there you have it, Cathryn Turhan is the new President. Unfortunately we won’t be seeing a monorail any time soon or an end to Dieudonne’s so called ‘neo-liberalism’ at Warwick, but let’s see if experience really does count…
