Nick Swain: Where Is He Now?

The Tab met up with the beloved former SU president Nick Swain to see where he is now, what he has planned and spoke about some contentious issues including that infamous video.

He has more degrees than a protractor, but this second year MA student is now studying Creative and Media Enterprises, “the most entrepreneurial degree I could find without going back to WBS”.

But he still has a major role and influence within our SU. Nick Swain is currently a Postgraduate Councillor and NUS Delegate for Warwick.

When asked about running again for President, he was of the opinion that fresh blood was needed to keep the SU progressive, “I have given what I can… it is time for fresh ideas in the SU and anyway I am getting on a bit!”

Wait….is that Nick Swain? It sure is, after losing more than 3 stone in one term. Good on ya!

He regards the experience as a once in a life time and he will never forget working with influential people across the country, and on such issues as Nigel Thrift’s pay rise, “to which I was against and stated as such to the Vice Chancellor when I voted against it during University Council last year”.

He also fondly remembers victories during the year, such as securing a 24-hour opening schedule for Costcutter and implementing a shuttle bus service around the campus.

Nick proved everyone wrong by making it to the final 24 rowing applicants.

Now the contentious issue. We all know what burdened Nick Swain’s presidential campaign last year with the “Bra-Gate” scandal and he said “At the end of the day you need to be strategic in politics and I lost that battle. I don’t agree with what they did, but I have no hard feelings for anybody involved now”.

He does however think that the incident was “blown out of proportion”, at one point it was the most viewed article of the Daily Mail. “It was a really crap time in my life so far, but when I had to take a week out Ben Sundell and the rest of my team really helped me through it… it felt like we were a family

I felt more for the girl involved in the video because she is a close friend of mine and I didn’t want her to go through hell and back because of the video and subsequent articles.”

We all remember this photo, but Nick Swain has forgiven and forgotten.

Physically Nick Swain has changed significantly since then, dropping from over 19 stone to 15.5 stone since the start of last term. When asked what his weight loss secret was, he replied that he went to the gym everyday after joining the Warwick Rowing team, making the squad despite being told he was unlikely to pass the qualification test. He is now in the squad of 24 rowers out of 100 initial applicants!

No more sweets for Swain. Just protein shakes and chicken.

So what does the future hold for Nick Swain? Well, he wants to go traveling and he may even run for a different position in the SU for the next academic year.

He left us with this message; “My one piece of advice is to never say never… I never thought I would be SU President when I came to Warwick and I’m so glad I did it” and a shout out for Ben Sundell; “He is a great friend and always has been, I even used to live with him in Rootes!

Ben becoming President was the next best thing after me winning and I wish him all the best for the rest of his tenure.”
