A man reported to police for acting suspiciously on the top floor of a building next to Marketgate halls is a maintenance worker employed by the university.

Dozens of concerned Marketgate residents called police after they saw a man allegedly looking into their flats through a pair of binoculars.

The police investigated the incident, but concluded that the man in question is a maintenance employee with all the legitimate paperwork.

A Bristol Police spokesperson said: “By all means it’s suspicious, but after searching the building we found him doing some maintenance work on the top floor.

“Due to him holding an official permit to work there, we can’t tell him to stop doing his job and leave.”

Many of those living in Marketgate remain concerned.

Fresher Barney Wilkes said: “We watched him all night and saw no signs of work being done, but they proceeded to tell the man to leave anyway – surprise, surprise the guy returned around 4.30am and got even creepier flickering the lights on and off while looking directly at us.

“He’s been there every day since Saturday and I’m still waiting for him to appear tonight.

“We’ve found out now that the police can’t actually do anything because he’s legally allowed to be on the premises.”

The owners of the accommodation block, Unite Students, declined to comment.
