Nottingham is the eighth drunkest city in the country

At least we’re doing better than Salford

The Top 50 places for hospital admissions relating to ‘alcohol-related conditions’ have been discovered and Nottingham has come out at number 8.

In Notts 954.2 out of every 100,000 locals were sent to hospital for excessive drinking in 2013/14.

Stoke on Trent came out 2nd with 982.5 for every 100,000. Following up closely were Sunderland (967.5 per 100,000), Norwich (960.5 per 100,000) and Middlesbrough (960 per 100,000).

Islington was the only area in London to be named, at 31st place, with 800.8 people for every 100,000 being admitted.

Out of the top 20 places, 14 of them are in the North of England, 4 in the Midlands, 1 in East Anglia and 1 in the South West.

MP Liam Byrne uncovered these figures after writing to the Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt. Mr Byrne said “Booze abuse costs Britain a staggering £21 billion a year.”

“These shocking figures expose just where our problem is biggest.

“We’ve got to now make sure councils and health chiefs have proper plans in place to put treatment in reach of drinkers needing help.”
