The Guardian ranks Sussex Uni top 50 in the UK for 11 subjects

As long as we’re beating Brighton Uni it’s ok

The Guardian UK Universities League Table rankings have been released for 2021. Overall, The University of Sussex are placed at 59th, however we made the top ten for four subjects, and the top 50 for eleven subjects.

This comes after Sussex was ranked 40th in the UK by The Complete University Guide, and 21st in the UK by The Times World University Rankings earlier this year.

The Guardian league table gives each institution an overall score out of 100, and assesses universities based on criteria including: course and teaching satisfaction, feedback satisfaction, student to staff ratio, spend per student, career prospects and continuation.

Sussex gained 59.3 points overall, and was awarded 59th place, just below Bournemouth and Trinity St David, and above Liverpool. This ranking sees a fall by 18 places since 2020, and a further 15 places since 2019, where Sussex were ranked at 26th in the UK. It’s not all bad news though, because we beat Brighton University who ranked 114th.

Although Sussex’s position may not appear as impressive as previous years, we ranked in the top ten for American Studies (4th), Chemistry (8th), History of Art (8th), and Drama and Dance (10th), and Brighton and Sussex medical school jumped from 10th in 2020 to 5th this year.

Additionally, Sussex remained in the top 50 for Physics (14th) Criminology (41st), Mechanical Engineering (31st), and made the top 50 this year for Electrical Engineering (42nd), Journalism (50th), and Music (48th).
