Sussex University ‘are unfortunately not in a position’ to offer students compensation for strikes

Today The University of Sussex announced that there is currently no offer to compensate students for teaching missed during the period of industrial action this year.

This was announced this afternoon via email, the University stated: “we are unfortunately not in a position to offer in this time.”

This follows after the University’s recent announcement that they have already lost over £10 million since the beginning of the pandemic.

In the email sent to students, the University said that they understand many students will be upset with this decision, they stated: “We know that some students will be disappointed by this decision. It was considered extremely carefully in light of how we spend our available resources on your education.”

One student going into her third year at the University exclusively told The Sussex Tab: “I am confused and shocked and the University’s decision not to compensate for the strikes. With COVID-19 and the strikes, I have lost the majority of teaching for this term so to not compensate students properly makes me lose faith in the University. It is ridiculous.”

The University ended their email by offering students the chance to make a formal complaint through the Student Hub. However, they also stated that they “hope that you appreciate all the immediate measures the University has taken in difficult and challenge circumstances.”
