A guide on how to get through a rough university break up

The priority is your mental health

Breakups happen all the time, people will come and go and you may be left feeling like you’re to blame. Taking care of yourself and your mental health should be your number one priority always, especially if your love life is turning sour.

If you ever find yourself in the vulnerable position of going through a bad breakup, take a minute to remind yourself of the following tips to help you get back on track.

Really think about how you feel

Your first instinct after a breakup may be to constantly keep yourself distracted, keeping your mind off the situation entirely. But in order to heal, you need to think about how you really feel about the situation.

It’s okay to feel confused or disoriented after a breakup. Are you sad? Are you angry? Are you frustrated? Take time to process all your feelings. Knowing exactly how you feel will help you figure out what to do next to make yourself feel better.

Remember this is as bad as it’ll get

No matter what you’re feeling right now, remember it can only get better from here. As cliché as it sounds, time really is a healer. And through acknowledging this, you’re allowing yourself to look optimistically at the future.

There will come a time when you’ll question why you ever let yourself get into a rut over someone who really wasn’t worth your time anyway.

Get it all out of your system

Crying. Screaming. Punching a pillow. Whatever it is that you feel like you need to do to get your frustrations out of your system, do it. The worst thing you can do is bottle up any emotions that you have and end up having a breakdown over the simplest thing weeks down the line for this exact reason.

Prime example of what you should NOT do.

Keep your distance

It’s very tempting to “check-up” on the other person. In a moment of weakness, you can find yourself in an endless cycle of social media stalking, whether that is constantly checking their stories.

We have all been guilty of doing this before and more often than not, you’ll only end up getting yourself more hurt than before.

Adopt an “out of sight, out of mind” mentality and stop yourself from becoming obsessed with the memory of someone.

Make plans and make yourself happy

Once you’ve processed all your feelings, it’s time to take care of yourself and your needs. Make plans to do things you love, whether that is going to a gig or a bit of retail therapy, make sure you nourish your need for whatever it is that makes you happy.

And while you’re at it, remember to surround yourself with people who love you and care for your wellbeing. Confiding in someone you’re close with can be the best form of therapy and strengthen friendships. That’s a win-win situation.

Mindfulness and physical health

You’ve probably heard this before, but we will say it again: exercising is a great way to relieve stress and uplift your mood. It’s hard to feel terrible and think negatively when your body feels amazing. But taking care of your body is just as important as taking care of your mind.

Meditating is something that can literally make you feel better in an instant. Taking a few minutes out of your day to relax, clear your head and be in the moment can really help you come a long way. You’ll feel more in tune with yourself and the flow of your thoughts, creating a more stable environment for yourself.

Don’t blame yourself

This is probably the most important point and cannot be reiterated enough. Remember that you are not to blame for whatever happened.

Everything happens for a reason and though it may seem like things aren’t working out in your favour right now, it will all fall back into place soon enough.
