Why has the whole university been invited to a meeting?

Yes, it’s annoying, but it’s provided a place for some brilliant replies

A couple of weeks ago, an email invitation to a meeting with a huge mailing list was sent out. No one knows what the original email was with some thinking that someone may have got a hold of a academic email and sent out university wide email. The source of the email hasn’t been verified nor where the meeting actually was, so we investigated.

Speaking to Internal Comms, they haven’t verified the exact cause of the emails, they have said: “We realise that this is very frustrating for students who are receiving these emails and we apologise for any inconvenience caused.

“We are working with IT Services to sort out this problem as soon as possible. Thanks for being so understanding.”

A few replies asking where the meeting was and what it was about came through, but the university Internal Comms quickly picked up on it and sent out an email saying it was a mistake and we all thought that was that.

So what the hell happened?

The following situation can only be described as #meetingate.

Over the last couple of days, a small group of jokers brought the email back to life and now it’s quite frankly spiralling out of control. While it’s nothing on the scale of UCL’s Bellogate, students and faculty alike have been getting involved in some top quality banter.

Some people have not taken too kindly to what has been coined as ‘meetingate’, because let’s face it, it is really irritating. There have been calls for people to stop replying as they’re not comfortable receiving emails from people they don’t know and they want to chain broken.

However, the more fun members of the Sussex University community have taken to having the whole uni at their fingertips like a duck to water. One guy tried to promote his music video whilst another was spitting bars of his own.

A Doctoral Researcher said: “There will never be a meeting for this motley crew’ but others were not in agreement with him. If there’s one thing academics love, it’s meetings. There has been suggestions for a meeting about the meeting and a pre-meeting to establish an agenda for the meeting about the meeting.”

The emails have died back down now and this guy got the last word. You’ve got to admire him for trying.
