Calling all writers: Why you should write for The Tab Sussex

Reach thousands of different readers with each story

Be warned, extremely cliche recruiting post is below. Enter at your own risk.

We are all in the same boat, this year you want to buck up your ideas and join as many extra-curricular groups to broaden your intellectual horizons.  This is a perfect opportunity to join The Tab!

To have your stories read by thousands, sign up and become part of the team.

I mean, we even have shirts

We are completely independent from the University and have great perks to boot. For starters, we let you cover any story you feel passionately about where 60 000, yes, 60 000 unique readers a month come to our site. We don’t expect you to be the next Samuel Pepys, we train you up in the ways of the force to throw down some crazy Jedi mind tricks in writing and where else to do this better than the home of the Jedi Capital of the UK?

We also provide valuable links to other universities across the countries to open up lines of communications to create stories like this. If your stories are good enough, which they obviously will be, they may get posted on our national site which gets 5 million viewers a month. We also provide workshops, conferences, communications between national newspapers such as The Times to really help our writers discover their inner creative talents.  We also get opportunities to go to events around the country like Farr festival, Wildlife, Secret Garden Party, and bunch others.

Not bad for a online student paper is it?

What sets us apart is that we are digital and separate from the university meaning that we pretty much get free rein with what we can publish. The Sussex team are extremely close and talk every day with new ideas, and we develop your portfolio for you. So if you are striving to get that top job, all you need to do is show your personal page on The Tab to big up your amazing work.

We are a student paper run by students, we know what we want to read. We know the audience because we are the audience. The Sussex Tab has run stories from my attempts to drink every beer in our student bar, to stories about how our ‘amazing’ Wi-Fi was attacked by cyber terrorists. All of which racking up a tonne of views.

If they let this guy in, you stand a very good chance

Regular meetings are held in Sussex weekly to discuss ideas, share stories, but mainly to have a drink and have a good time. One of our newer writers, Auguste Oliver, received over 9000 views on her first article. Charlotte Grant got over 43 000 on her first article as well. Some of our stories that go national have had around 50 000 hits alone! You don’t need a background in English, Journalism, or even any text based subject to join us, if you are passionate about writing we can help you.

Alumni for The Tab have gone onto great things such as Buzzfeed, The Evening Standard, and The Huffington Post. The Tab also offer qualifications and discounted journalism courses for those wishing to get a bit more.

“Working for The Tab should be how every journalist learns from now on. I went from knowing nothing to knowing all the right people and getting into the national papers in a matter of months.” Liam Evans, ex-Editor.

“I started writing for The Sussex Tab when it first started running. Within a week, I’d published my first story and been read by thousands of people. Within a month, I was promoted to News Editor, and I’ve been Head Editor for nearly a year now. One of my articles about Croydon being the worst hometown went viral multiple times, and has had over 100,000 views. By writing for The Tab, I’ve been read by more people than I ever could have imagined. Joining is great because you don’t need experience, you get help from trained journalists, and you get to attend awesome training days . Working for The Sussex Tab landed me my first journo work experience at The Tab National in London. I’ve also bagged a discounted place on an NCTJ course because of The Tab.” Sarah George, Ex-Editor and extremely lovely person

“I felt excited looking at the numbers rack up on a really stupid opinion piece that I did. Knowing that there was an audience that was interested in what I wanted to write, even as ridiculous as it was, spurred me on to create bigger and better content. You can certainly see a trend with what pops off and what doesn’t, and you adapt accordingly. I now am Editor and have taken part in many different workshops to help my writing get better. All of this was from a opinion piece that I took the plunge with to publish” Kyle Farrell, Head Editor and professional idiot.
