Eddie Izzard to conclude tour at Sussex University

The Pro-Europe Comedian is to conclude his ‘Stand Up For Europe’ tour at Sussex on June 22nd

Comedian and pro-Europe campaigner Eddie Izzard will conclude his nationwide ‘Stand Up for Europe’ tour in Sussex University’s Attenborough Centre on Wednesday 22nd June, just 24 hours before polling day.

Izzard, who has described himself as a proud ‘British European’, is looking to use the tour encourage people to exercise their democratic rights, and to persuade them to vote remain in the referendum next week.

Added to this, Izzard’s 31 stop tour will take place at university facilities, with the comedian passionate over the idea that young people have the most to love if Britain was to leave the European Union. The comedian also recently appeared on Question Time where he clashed with UKIP leader Nigel Farage. Izzard’s overriding argument for staying in the EU is that “We gradually move forwards, not backwards. That above all is my argument for remaining in Europe: is this not the story of humanity?”

Izzard’s tour and beliefs have been described as idealistic and many have found similarities between him and the moralistic outlook of figures such as Bernie Sanders. Others have looked to find weaknesses in such a philosophical approach to the referendum and during the Question Time broadcast Izzard was told to shut up by an audience member. His passion cannot be doubted however.

Laura McDermott, Creative Director of the Attenborough Centre, said: “We’re excited that Eddie chose to bring his national tour to University of Sussex less than 24 hours before ballots open. Eddie is a fantastic performer and he is passionate about the things he believes in. I find him very inspiring”.

Tickets are currently sold out for the lunchtime event.
