We interviewed the organisers of Boundary Brighton

Ever wondered what it’s like organising a festival?

Boundary Brighton is a new music festival happening right on our doorstep. Not only are we extremely pumped for Boundary to give us a festival that blows all others out of the water, we were lucky enough to spend some time with the bright people in charge of the whole event.

Who are you?

We’re Will, Paul and Alice and we run a company called LWE. We are some of the partners in Boundary.

Will, Alice and Paul

Describe Boundary Brighton in five words.

Beautiful, fun, diverse, ridiculous, Brightonian.

Of the many places in the UK, why did you choose Brighton as the location for Boundary?

One of us lives in Brighton (Paul) and he absolutely loves it. We felt like it was missing a good value for money festival that appealed to a wide audience but focused around electronic music, which is what we love and know best.

Creamfields is known for its electric music, Reading has an indie feel. What is it that makes Boundary Brighton distinct?

There are a lot of electronic music festivals out there now and so we have tried to create something a little different. We have gone for the music we love but with lots of flavours of fun and quirkiness. We have also made a big effort with the site decor and feel.  It will definitely be more than the normal format of big, plastic tents in a field with some uninteresting food vendors. We have really put the effort in with the extras.

How excited are you working with some of the best events talents in the UK to create boundary brighton?

Alongside us, as LWE, we have invited down Mixmag and Elrow, two brands we have worked with a few times over the last few years. Both brands are at the top of their game right now but for very different reasons. Mixmag has really thrived and evolved at a time when printed magazines have struggled and we have lost some of the stalwart music publications. They have carved out a great niche and we feel like they really understand music and the industry. Elrow are just an amazing success story, tickets fly out every time they go on sale. Have you ever been to an Elrow party? Its totally bezerk… and so much fun!

Personally, how rewarding/stressful is organising this event?

It’s hard… You can either embark on the process alone, which can be great because you have no-one to convince that your idea is best and there are no chance of any internal arguments OR you can find some partners, share the risk and the load but that can come with conflicts as you might not all be on the same page. As LWE we have been together six years and we do everything together work-wise, and sometimes socially. We’re like a weird, dysfunctional family. Putting on events is a real rollercoaster of challenges but with a decent team the highs always outnumber the lows.

What surprises can we expect in the coming weeks?

Well the main stage (Mixmag and Concorde2) is going to be big and beautiful and a little different to a normal rectangular main stage, this should feel big but intimate. The Elrow and Arch stage will be full on madness, as always. And our stage in conjunction with Patterns, we can’t wait to reveal what it will be. Completely unique and it will be a really intimate atmosphere in an amazing structure.
