Akala is coming to Sussex for Decolonizing Education Week

He’s talking about hip-hop and Shakespeare

Rapper and poet Akala is coming to Sussex next week to give a talk on hip-hop and Shakespeare as part of Decolonizing Education Week.

Running from April 11-14, Sussex Decolonizing Education Week is a week of events organised by “I Too Am Sussex,” a student-led campaign which aims to unveil racial inequalities and how other factors like gender, class, sexual orientation, disability, etc. come into play.

There will be a series of events both on campus and in Brighton for people to learn about what Decolonization means and its importance in today’s world, as well as how to affect change in their university, educational system as well as their personal outlook to “decolonize our minds.”

A BAFTA and MOBO award-winning hip-hop artist, poet, historian, presenter, journalist, script-writer, activist, entrepreneur (I could go on,) Akala’s music blends together beautifully intricate story-telling with rap, rock and electro-punk.

He is also known for his music theatre production company, “The Hip Hop Shakespeare Company,” (THSC) which he founded in 2009 and has since gathered worldwide attention in the media, for exploring the similarities found between the works of present day rappers and the writings of William Shakespeare.

Having established himself as one of the most compelling talents in the UK, Akala’s lectures and seminars have not been scarce of attention and he will be giving one on hip-hop and Shakespeare at Sussex in the Fulton A lecture theatre on Wednesday April 13 at 7pm.
