Universally challenged: Sussex defeated in second chance to the second round

We don’t need none of your fancy book learnin’

If you’re anything like me you’ll have grown up with your parents eagerly anticipating the day you appear on University Challenge.

Again, if you’re anything like me you’ll now be aware of how unlikely these expectations were.

However, for four lucky Sussex students this dream was turned into a reality, complete with J Pax.

The four students (Whitehurst, Spence, Macdonald and Dean) represented Sussex on Monday 3rd November against Manchester.

Unfortunately, the outcome of 95 to 210 knocked Sussex out of the round and demolished any hope we had of winning the title of UC victors.

With a seemingly promising start, with Sussex 20 points up 16 minutes in, it seemed it would be an easy ride into 1st place, despite Jeremy Paxman claiming “Eccles cakes couldn’t help this time round”.

Despite not beating Manchester, Sussex can still be proud to have got 95 points.

It’s certainly more than I would have got; and when was the last time you had J Pax shouting questions in your face on T.V.?
