What Scottish bouncers really think of us

‘You make the night go quicker’

| UPDATED

With three main uni’s and a student population of approximately 45,000, Glasgow’s bouncers are kept busy all year round. They play a key role in the night out experience – sometimes they kick people out, often endure chat up lines and always listen to the drunken rants as we stagger out of the club on the way to the chip van.

But what do these stern-looking door minders really think of students? Did they eagerly anticipate our return, or would they prefer town without us?

We went to the biggest clubs in Scotland to find out.

El Barrio, Glasgow

Thumbs up for his sarcasm

“Yes, I was peeing my pants for the students return…”

Kushion, Glasgow

“I don’t who I prefer really, students or locals. A bit of both, I’d say. However, it is based on students anyway to be honest and Kushion is always busy. You guys definitely make it busier on a Tuesday night.”

Opal Lounge, Edinburgh

Well hello

“Having you guys around makes the night go quicker because it is busier.  During the holidays I always want students to come back – you keep me in a job!”

Kokomo, Glasgow

“When students are back it’s busy and a lot of new folk. There are ups and downs. We get people from like of Dumfries moving up, who haven’t been to clubs before. Freshers might only be 18 and drink 2/3 vodka cokes and do get very light on their toes.”

Social, Glasgow

“Of course we are happy to have the students back. We want their money and need people to come through the door. Generally, age is not a problem really with the new freshers. When you guys are are back it’s busy with a lot of new folk. ”

Paramount, Aberdeen

“We prefer it when the students are away.”

All in all, despite the stern looks on many a bouncers face, the majority are secretly rather fond of us.  Students bring in the majority of the income, and create the popular nights we know and love. Mile High Mondays (Kokomo), Juicy Tuesdays (Kushion) and No Way Wednesdays (The Shimmy Club) wouldn’t exit without us. We provide bouncers not only with an endless source of entertainment during a long shift, but also help keep them in a job.
