Should Dapper Laugh’s Campus gig have been axed?

‘It’s a load of pish’

Top-lad comic Dapper Laugh’s was supposed to gig at Campus on April 2nd but was no platformed by a petition signed by over 1,000 people.

The petition complained of “his tired jokes which dehumanise women and trivialise rape… perpetuating the lad culture which leaves women feeling unsafe.”

It was started by NUS Scotland women’s officer Vonnie Sandlan, who said, “I’m absolutely delighted it’s being cancelled, but I’m quite concerned it was booked in the first place.”

She linked Dappers appearance to, “endemic sexism on campuses, which we’ve branded as ‘lad culture.'”

But should he have been censored? This is what you had to say.

Habbi, 3rd year, Biomedical Science

“It’s a load of pish. If people wanna go see him they should be able to. It’s getting blown way out of proportion. You shouldn’t be able to petition someone out, it’s an electronic mob.”

Jennifer, 2nd year, Law

“I think it should’ve happened a long time ago because it does contribute to sexism. Last year it blew up all at the same time as the Ched Evans scandal and that was unhealthy. He shouldn’t have been booked into Campus in the first place.”

David, 4th year, Economics

“He should be allowed to say what he wants, let the boy gig.”

Ollie, 4th year, Biomedical Science

“Yeah his characters sexist, and a bit tasteless, but if you look at a lot of comedians it’s their job to be pretty brutal about stuff, disabilities, suicide etc. People just want an excuse to censor him ’cause they don’t like him. Just don’t go. ”

Kirsty (left) and Ailidh, 2nd year, Law

Ailidh, “I think that he shouldn’t have been booked in the first place but it’s right that he’s been cancelled.

“I’d say I’ve definitely not experienced sexism in uni, I think we are quite good here.”

Kirsty, “As a 19 year old girl I wouldn’t chose to see him, I would feel uncomfortable. If I met him in the street I would be almost scared that I would end up in his videos or something. Dyou know what I mean? Like if you saw him you’d want to avoid him.

“But then you’d want to try and hide but you’d also be like do I have to go along with this? Do I have to laugh? What happens? What do I do? And if I don’t go along with it will something else happen, will he publicly call me a prude or whatever.”

Ian, 2nd year, History and Politics

“Are you asking me because you think it’s up my street? I already know how to pull girls mate. He’s fun to laugh at but I don’t find him that funny.

“Don’t take a picture today my hair’s shit.”

Adele, 4th year, marketing

“It just started off as lad banter, you know like guys in uni what they chat and joke about which is just a bit of fun. But when it went viral and got all this attention that’s when it became a problem for a lot of people, especially feminists.

“If people think they should act like Dapper Laughs in real life after seeing him, well then, they’re just fucking idiots.”
