The on-campus library has made a massive £146,000 from unlucky students shelling out for late book returns.

The figures show that last year alone (2012/2013) the university received a total of £40,246. Meanwhile this year (2013 to present) it has totalled £14,543, with 12,451 fines issued to 1,392 people.

The highest amount ever charged to a single person comes in at a whopping £590.80. The highest fine so far this year totals £208, with four others over the £100 already.

However, the winner of the library fines war must surely be the brave soul who managed to amass an insane 298 fines over the 2011/2012 period.

The statistics provided highlight a staggering amount paid to the university library. Richard Sharman, a second year psychology student, said, “Fair enough if they are using it for useful things that they need, you know if they are actually going to compensate what they are missing, but it is a bit of a joke if it is being used for whatever they want.”

Line and IT Manager for the library, David Garner, along with other library staff members, have yet to respond.
