Hangover breakfast: Dempsey’s Diner

It used to be a toilet, but don’t let that put you off

hangover breakfast

I was told by many that Dempsey’s Diner is a hidden gem, a must eat for a hangover foodie. Either they don’t know me too well or they are still drunk when they eat there. It’s great value but nothing exciting.

Nothing kills a hangover like bacon

The diner, on Station Road across from the train station, previously functioned as a public toilet, but thankfully you can’t tell. However the cramped interior with only a few tables felt slightly uncomfortable. The diner seems to cater more for take-away customers, with just an option to sit in. That being said the service was very fast.

So if you’re in extreme need of a hangover remedy you won’t have to wait long, although it’s no bad thing if you have to. Motown classics drift quietly and very pleasantly through the TV. I’m still internally contesting what really is the best hangover song? Maybe best I leave that for another feature. (Send us your suggestions!)

Perhaps expecting too much is the sort of thing that can taint a review, so I should say that Dempsey’s is perfect if you want cheap fried food. I was in the mood for a little bit more indulgence that morning. Won’t somewhere please just serve me the best eggs benedict?!

£4.50 for this and unlimited tea/coffee

I ordered their full breakfast, as they did not offer much more. At a bargain price of £4.50, with unlimited tea and coffee, I do really find it hard to complain about on the surface.

However, it just lacked love. Comprising of all the usual suspects: beans, toast, potato scone, bacon, black pudding, fried egg, square and link sausages (told you it was a bargain), it sure filled me up. It just did not really satisfy.

The diner also offers scrambled eggs on toast and a variety of filled rolls for a very reasonable price.

Maybe in future I shall come back to Dempsey’s Diner for a quick takeaway and retreat to my bed of drink induced self-pity.
