Students happy with pricey new digs

New accommodation Willow Court proving a hit with its residents.

Newly built on-campus residence Willow Court has proved popular with its residents, despite the hefty price tag.

The conveniently located housing boasts impressive features – double beds, en-suites, massive kitchens and even a TV with license already paid.

However, these luxuries come at a cost. The accommodation is priced at eight instalments of £599, coming in at nearly £5,000 for the entire year.

This is substantially more than most of the other on-campus housing, yet students are willing to pay this in order to experience the new and fresher feel.

The flats contained in this housing sleep between nine and eleven, likening them more to first year halls than the other returning undergraduate houses. Yet, many of Willow Court’s residents are returning students, eager to try the new digs out after living in outdated residences for years before.

4th Year Film Student Fiona Hunter has previously lived in Andrew Stewart Hall, Fraser of Allander House and H H Donnelly House. She opted for Willow Court this year, to see her final year at Stirling out in style.Speaking about whether this move had been worth the cost, Fiona said, “So far I’ve really enjoyed it. It’s a massive step up.

“It was a pricey decision, and at first I wasn’t sure it would even be worth it. But, it really has been. It’s nicer looking and having my own en-suite has been a nice change from the past couple of years.

“Small touches like a double bed instead of a single and an already paid for TV licence all just add up to make it worth the cost. I’m happy to pay the cost when I compare it to other the other housing I lived in. It was dark and dingy feeling – this place is bright, it just feels really fresh.”

As Stirling continues to renovate its campus, we will see new accommodation popping up and old favourites going down. Whether or not the prices keep rising remains to be seen, but for now students are happy to pay the cost.
