Meet St Andrews’ friendly neighbourhood dogs
From gluten intolerant Doughal to friendly Oscar, here are the dogs at the heart of St Andrews
Siobhan AliThe latest student-run initiative in St Andrews, the Dog Walking Society is a welcome addition to the Fife Coastal town.
Alex and his committee run group walks twice a week on Saturdays and Sundays from 12pm to 1pm.
Started in January by second-year International Relations and History student Alex Latto, the society hosts dog walks every weekend, bringing together students and residents’ dogs.
Each walk features between 10 to 12 dogs (with bigger dogs on Saturdays and smaller pups on Sundays). Students are paired up with dogs and are sometimes joined by owners on the walk. The society also hosted a CDP accredited Dog First Aid Training Course for its members.
The goal of the society is simple: Alex aims to combat homesickness at university by offering a piece of home and encouraging animal contact which is often what students miss the most about being home. At the same time, the Dog Walking Society offers support for the local community by helping residents who do not have the time to take their dogs out for longer walks or face challenges due to their disabilities or age.
Here are some of the gorgeous puppies you can take on an adventure St Andrews’ beaches…
Molly – initially shy but chatty once you get to know her.
Oscar – very sociable and looking to make new friends.
Charlie – deceptively strong both physically and personality-wise.
Doughal and Flora – both miniature Schnauzers, Doughal has a gluten allergy.
Lucy – mama to Max who lives across town, mother and son are reunited on weekly walks.
The Dog Walking Society charges £1 per walk or students can pay £5 to buy membership and enjoy free walks for the entirety of the semester. In light of health and safety concerns associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, all dog walks for the rest of the semester were cancelled. However, current members have their membership extended into the next academic year for free.
