Best of the Northern Lights in St Andrews

In a rather rare event, the Northern Lights could be viewed clearly from West Sands, the Pier, and various other points throughout town.


Last night (6th March), Aurora Borealis otherwise known as the Northern Lights, was able to be seen above St Andrews.

This phenomena is caused by various particles in the atmosphere losing emitting energy in the form of photons, or light. The various colours seen as caused by the different gases that are present in the atmosphere.

The Northern Lights are typically viewed in more Northern areas, such as Iceland, Scandinavian countries, and northern Canada. While people have viewed the Northern Lights in St Andrews before, it has rarely ever been this clear and brilliant.
