Sailing Club Garden Party Reviewed

If you’re having trouble finding any Pimms in St Andrews, it’s probably because it was all at the not-to-be-missed annual Sailing Club Garden Party.

Do you like sailing? Or boats in general? Maybe just the idea of water? Well any of these would qualify you as a perfect fit for the St Andrews Sailing Club. Known for their parties as much as for their sailing, I can say first hand how much fun this club has been for the past few years.

As a proper freshers welcome, the club recently hosted the annual Sailing Club Garden Party, which was more of a gravel party due to a notable lack of ‘garden’. Regardless of the terrain, the party was noticeable from the sail hanging out of the window and billowing on North Street. Club members from all years and many interested new comers came to enjoy a mellow afternoon of good music, great chat, and bottomless Pimms (among other adult beverages). Never a disappointment, I received a warm welcome from the committee before following the music to a crowded back garden filled with sailors and boat enthusiasts alike.

The sailing club is by far one of the most inclusive bunch of people in St Andrews, having equal parts sailors and social members at club events throughout the year. As could be seen at the Garden Party, old club members and keen new freshers joined together to talk about sailing, enjoy a few drinks, and take advantage of the last shreds of summertime. Not that cold weather has ever stopped the sailing club from braving the North Sea.

From beginners’ sailing courses to competitive racing events throughout Scotland, the dinghy sailing and yatching teams can be found out on the water anywhere from St Andrews bay to the slightly sunnier Mediterranean over the course of the year. When they’re not sailing, the club holds weekly socials, from the traditional Black Tie to slightly more challenging competitive flat crawls.

If you’re interested in sailing, the dinghy team trials will take place from the 19-20th of September. If you’re not into sailing but keen to party with the greatest club in town, follow the group on Facebook. Sailing is insanely fun, so climb aboard and leave the pirate jokes on shore.
