Five things to do this week

Get excited about an artsy week of drama, comedy and music!

1. Today is your last chance to see ‘Spring Awakening’, a rock musical based on a 1981 play of the same title by Frank Wedekind, which was banned in Germany for its treatment of masturbation, abortion, rape, and suicide. The music and drama are compelling and memorable, making this one of Broadway’s finest productions in recent years, and Just So Society has ensured that their acting cast and production team have done it justice. Tickets can be bought online for £8 at http://byretheatre.com/events/otr-spring-awakening-a-new-musical/.

2. This Tuesday marks the annual ‘Jonny Wookey Memorial Ice Hockey Game’, organised in memory of one of the founding members of St Andrews’ Ice Hockey Club, who tragically passed away before his graduation in 2012. Tickets are £10, and transport to and from the venue in Dundee is included in that price. Unfortunately, tickets are now sold out, snatched up by ice hockey enthusiasts during Spring break, so post in the FB event to find out if anyone is selling theirs. Prepare for an afternoon of friendly rivalry, chanting and chilled drinking in loving honour of an enthusiastic, incredibly skilled hockey player!

3. Leymah Gbowee, 2011 Nobel Peace Laureate, is talking to St Andrews Africa Summit about her life and career as a peace activist, social worker and women’s rights advocate on Friday the 10th of April in the Medicine Lecture Theatre. Tickets are £5, and can be bought outside the library on Wednesday from 11:00 until 15:00. Don’t miss out on the once in a lifetime opportunity to hear first hand about how a woman contributed to the termination of a civil war, as well as to the instatement of women in prominent political positions in her native country, Liberia.

4. The St Andrews Revue is presenting a showcase of the predicted comedy trends of 2015 on Friday in the Byre Theatre, wittily named ‘FASHION’. Tickets can be bought online at http://byretheatre.com/events/otr-the-st-andrews-revue-presents-fashion/, £5 for standard, an extra 50 pence for VIP. If you’re fond of sketch comedy, you’ll love whatever these comedians have up their sleeves!

5. This week, Music is Love and On the Rocks bring you ‘The Music Café Series’, a few evenings of live music performed by musicians of St Andrews. Go along today, Wednesday and Friday to the Old Union Diner Café from 22:00 until 00:00 to unwind after a day of lectures to music written and played by fellow students. Entry is free, and tea, coffee and cake will be available, what’s not to love?
