BINDI Review

Setting aside ball gowns and champagne, Friday night had St Andrews dancing to Bollywood beats with BINDI

For some, Friday night meant a Shakespeare-inspired Ball from DRA/FP, but for the St Andreans that have access to a well-kept secret, the night meant one thing, and one thing only: it’s time to set aside the kilts and grab your saris for BINDI! What I personally consider to be one of the best events each semester, BINDI is hosted by the Sanskriti society, a group that provides a night of insanely vibrant South Asian culture to everyone who is lucky enough to grab a ticket.

For only £8, tickets provided access to a night of Bollywood beats and what most would view as very questionable dancing. With a welcoming crowd and a fully stocked bar at the Scores Hotel, BINDI was a smashing evening of lively rhythms and groovy moves that had guests dancing and drinking all night long. While the event is set to start at 9, it doesn’t usually kick off until past 10. After an early arrival last semester, where a few brave souls took to the dance floor and busted a move like no one was watching, I opted for a later arrival this time around, and when I arrived, I was not disappointed.

Once the evening was kicked into full gear and guests were pouring in, people could be seen milling about on the dance floor, dancing to the beat of the dhol, or in some cases, their own (very offbeat) drum. DJ Harri returned for yet another fabulous set that provided everything from popular hits to energetic Bollywood beats, giving guests a unique mix that blended cultures and catered to the entire crowd.

The eclectic mix of guests could be seen in both style of dance and style of dress. From various people donning the traditional saris to the jazzy sequined dresses and vibrant coloured outfits, it was clear that BINDI is an event that welcomes everyone and never gets boring. Not your same old song and dance, the night was an experience that no other event in St Andrews offers, which definitely one of the reasons that it’s at the top of my list!

While the Scores Hotel provides a fantastic dance floor, the bar is one that has potential to break the bank. Regardless, BINDI is an event that, drinks or not, guests are guaranteed a fantastic night with friends. The Sanskriti society continues to impress me not only with their raging dance moves, but with their insanely fun nights out in the Bubble. Next time I’ll be sure to take note from the wiser guests and leave the heels at home; dancing for hours has left me incapacitated for the weekend. Converse or heels, don’t miss out next time on the non-stop fun of BINDI. Keep it up and balle balle!
