St Andrews Medieval App released

It’s free!

The app allows users to explore the town and its medieval sites through digital reconstruction.

A project team, led by Dr Katie Stevenson – a lecturer in Late Medieval History, has created the app. It will be freely available to all students and the general public. The app was launched this Friday for android use. iPhone users, however, will have to wait closer to Christmas for the app to be released for iOS users.

Bringing together images, text, audio and video, the app will enable users to explore St Andrews and its historical sites. Amongst the 22 famous sites we find St Andrews Cathedral, and St Mary’s College, as well as never seen before digital reconstructions of several sites, such as the West Port.

Sir Sean Connery makes a ‘guest appearance’ on the app, as a part of the audio-commentary. Being one of St Andrews honorary alumni, this is not the first time Connory contributes to the University, as he narrated the 600th anniversary film ‘Ever to Excel’.

The app has been created as a result of multidisciplinary work and research between the departments of computer science, history and classics. It seeks to give the general public an opportunity to learn through the use of images, video, text, and audio in exploring the rich history of the town. The creators hope that the app will inspire a new understanding of the medieval buildings and history of St Andrews.

The creators further hope to be able to expand the number of sites in the app in 2015, as well as developing themed site trails with the help of undergraduates.
