Review: STAR’s Cosmic Cabaret

The faces of radio showed us how to party in true STAR fashion

Being part of a STAR show myself, I am slightly accustomed to the wacky personalities and fun-loving attitudes of St Andrews’ radio heads. And yet nothing – nothing in this world – could have prepared me for their Cosmic Cabaret.

As is always the case with STAR socials, the location was fabulously decorated and was a delightful respite from the relentless November rain. Trinity Church Hall was transformed into an eccentric, other-worldly bliss: candles and glow sticks littered the tables, the night sky was projected onto the ceiling, and photos of presenters were hung around the room. With the added bonus of the event being BYOB, we were able to take a seat and not worry about fighting off drunken hooligans to reach a bar.

The event kicked off with a fabulous ode to Lady Gaga by the Jazzle Sisters who, in true Jazzle fashion, hosted the night in an explosion of glitter and face paint. It was impossible not to crack a smile at everyone’s reactions, particularly when it was announced that two audience members were required on stage and people ran for cover. And yet, as drinks continued to flow, people started to embrace the utter weirdness of the whole evening. The acts that followed were diverse (particularly in levels of soberness), and included stand-up comedy, a STAR take on the nativity scene, dating in the dark, and general blether by some of our favourite presenters. ‘Bizarre’ is putting it lightly, and yet you couldn’t help but laugh out loud and admire the uninhibited spirit of everyone that was involved.

I left the event feeling unsure of what I had just witnessed or experienced, but I take my hat off to STAR for, once again, entirely obliterating my expectations. For anyone who is yet to attend something hosted by these crazy and loveable people, make sure you get yourself to their next event!
