Preview: St Andrews Celebration Weekend
The biggest weekend of the year for St Andrews is on its way
IT’S COMING! The 601st Birthday of St Andrews is all kicking off this weekend. A four day extravaganza of celebrating the exclusive culture of the bubble, all starting with the St Andrews Ball on Friday night. Even if balls aren’t your thing, the weekend really has something for everyone, including music, food, ceilidhs, and exhibitions. The Stand got the low down on St Andrew’s Day itself (30th November). It will be celebrated with an outdoor event, headlined by the renowned singer Eddie Reader, top folk-rock band Anderson McGinty Webster Fish, the Edinburgh Banghra Crew and Siamsoir Irish Dance Performance Troupe and street theatre. St Andrews Day will pay tribute not just to traditional Scotland but also to contemporary, multicultural Scottish society.
If music isn’t your bag, the day is playing host to numerous other activities, including a St Andrews vs. The Rest of The World Golf Match played on the New Course, as well as a Local Landmarks Open Day with the Castle, Cathedral, and R & A Golf club all opening their doors, free of charge, to the public. Fiona Hyslop, Cabinet Secretary for Culture and External Affairs, said: “St Andrew’s Day marks the start of Scotland’s winter festivals and is the perfect opportunity to celebrate all that is great about Scotland – including our thriving contemporary culture, our rich heritage and our world-renowned warm and friendly welcome”.
With a ball, festive light switch on, ceilidh, food fayre, golf tournament, and mini music festival, is there anything else you could need to get you in the festive spirit?
