One Night STAND: The boys’ perspective

Richard and Sam review their first blind date.

The Stand is now involved in the matchmaking business, and we’re setting up some lucky St Andreans on blind dates. Last week four highly eligible bachelors and bachelorettes met for a free meal and a hot date at One Under. We crashed their meal halfway through to take some awkward photos, and then asked them to write about their experiences.

Today we’re hearing from Richard Singleton (The Stand’s very own Columns Editor) and Sam Colchester. Look out for tomorrow’s article to hear what the girls thought of the date!

1.) What would you rate the date?

Richard: A solid 8. The food was incredible, and the company wasn’t bad either.

Sam: 8

2.) How was your performance?

Richard: There was surprisingly little awkwardness in the end. Everyone got on well, and the conversation flowed.

Sam: I performed admirably, there was a competitive edge to this one. Conversation flowed nicely, slight hiccup when Richard jumped the gun and propositioned one of the girls early on.

3.) What actually happened on the date?

Richard: For food I ordered wild mushrooms and the Barnsley chop, both of which were cooked to perfection. I have to admit that Sam and I drank most of the two bottles of complimentary wine (though not through lack of courtesy). Combined with the One Under’s signature Espresso Martini it was a great Minimood pre.

We talked a lot about Texas, which seems like the greatest place on earth. The rodeo alone sounds amazing.

Annabel had to go to referee hall sport (or so she said), so we disbanded at the end of the meal. Went to Minimood and had a blast.

Sam: The fellas ordered starters, the girls just mains. It was clear that we were squeezing every drop from this one. Two bottles of house white greased the skids. A moment of inspiration from Richard when he persuaded us all to cap the feast off with a vast espresso martini.

4.) Are you going to see these people again?

Richard: Kit turned out to be head of the Karaoke Society here. Definitely going to check that out this week.

Sam: Yes, of course, we exchanged numbers. Fate denied us reconnecting later on at Minimood. Nonetheless, we’ve been tempted to join both the girls at one of their Friday night karaoke sessions.

5.) Would you go on a blind date again?

Richard: Yes, it was great fun. I’d recommend the double blind date in particular. Works very well.

Sam: Yeah I’d certainly go on another, sweet deal, only drawback was the photo, I was gunning for a candid one.
