MOvember Ball Preview
The Stand chats to the rugby boys about balls, taches, and great causes.
The Stand met up with Sam Bergius and Max Campbell of the St Andrews Rugby Football Club to get the inside scoop on this year’s MOvember Ball, the annual black tie event hosted by the club.
The Stand: The theme of your ball revolves around the ‘MOvember’ cause. What can guests expect from the Rugby Football Club at this year’s soirée, aside from questionable facial hair?
Well, hideous moustaches are pretty much the core of the event! It promises to be a great event, with around 80 or so rugby blokes and their friends getting merry and having fun. There’s going to be a three-course meal, followed by a ceilidh and what is sure to be a great dj set. There’s also a raffle with some ‘interesting’ prizes, including a walk on the beach with Max Campbell and dinner for you and 5 friends cooked by members of the RFC.
The Stand: MOvember Ball celebrates a great cause, raising money for the charity Wooden Spoon. How much of the proceeds from the ball go towards charity?
Every penny we make goes towards charity, and we make no profit as a club. This year we’re not only donating proceeds to Wooden Spoon. Half of the proceeds from this year’s ball will be going towards Connor’s Journey. It’s a cause close to home, as Connor, a rugby player at Stirling University injured his spinal cord at the start of this season. We’re helping to raise money for transportation and treatment at a facility in America.

The Stand: In St Andrews, rugby seems to be synonymous with rowdy. Just what kind of entertainment will this evening hold for the lucky attendees?
The event will have an array of speeches of questionable humour, depending on how witty club members are feeling. The rest of the night promises to hold the traditional activities of a St Andrews black tie event, with dancing, music, and friends. It’s going to be a great time!
The Stand: Aside from raising money for charity, what draws crowds to the RFC Ball?
Definitely the hideous ‘staches. It’s also a unique event, relatively new as well. It’s different from other events as it actually gives all profits to charity. It’s one of many events throughout the year, but it provides the chance to spend an evening with the rugby club, which is really great; it’s friends and club members usually, so overall a great scene.
The Stand: For the lovely men planning to don their newly grown out moustaches, do you have any styling tips?
Start early! Cheat rather than beginning in November, because if you’re anything like us, you’ll be way behind. Definitely try to think outside of the box. The worse it looks, the better, and the more ridiculous you feel just proves you know you’re doing it right! It’s for a great cause, and it’s a lot of fun.
In terms of fundraising for MOvember, the St Andrews RFC is in the top 100 in UK, with over £1000 raised thus far.

MO Ball is RFC’s push to get MOvember to be a St Andrews-wide set up. They are currently trying to get other sports clubs involved in participating in MOvember and raising money for charity. This is one of many events being run throughout November to support the cause. The event has already sold out, so congratulations to those who were lucky enough to grab tickets!
From the Handlebar to the Selleck, or those who choose to emulate Ron Burgundy, let’s don our best ‘staches for this worthy cause. And please, leave the Pornstar look at home.
For all of those who are getting keen for this year’s MOvember Ball, here are a few ‘MO Facts’ from the official Movember page:
– Albert Einstein had a moustache for over 50 years.
– Women are more attracted to men with Moustaches. Fact.
– Salvador Dalí published a book dedicated solely to his moustache.
– On average a man with a moustache touches it 760 times a day.

So there we have it, a genius, an artist, and apparently the entire population of females are big fans of facial hair. Hope you’re all looking forward to fine dining, dancing, and decorative moustaches that are sure to grace our presence at this year’s Charity Ball!
