Same Golf Club committee re-elected amid AU warnings
Is there a problem with club culture?
Following an incident inside McIntosh Hall last month during a Wednesday social, the University of St Andrews Men’s Golf Club was temporarily disbanded and a full re-election of the committee was planned for an EGM on 10th November.
Athletic Union President Sarah Thompson called all of the offending members of the committee into a disciplinary hearing and who were warned that their right to compete in future competitions could be revoked.
It appeared that this action by the AU President was part of the AU’s decision to crack down on ‘club culture’, apparent in the Men’s Golf Club as well as many other sports teams in St Andrews.
However, the EGM concluded with the re-election of almost exactly the same committee, with the exception of two minor positions.
In the light of this news, AU President Sarah Thompson told The Stand that:
“Communication between the Men’s Golf Club and the AU has never been better and the conversations with members leading up to the EGM have been very useful for both parties.”
“We are looking forward to moving on from this incident and working with the new committee to support them with their growth and development.”
Only time will tell if the disciplinary hearing and warning from the AU will have a meaningful effect on Men’s Golf and club cultures across St Andrews.
