Five things to do this week

After a freaky Friday night and weekend spent recovering, I hope you’re feeling alive and ready to make the most of this week’s events

1. Be impressed by St Andrews’ best slam poets

Inklight is hosting its first poetry slam of the year at Sandy’s Bar on November 4th at 19:30. Tickets are £2 for members, £4 for non-members, and guests have been promised free wine to add to the merriment of an evening of outstanding literary talent. If you want to perform, prepare a few poems and message Inklight’s FB page. I’m sure you can be squeezed into the line-up!

2. Be festive before exams

Christmas Ball tickets are being sold on Wednesday November 5th from 10:00 in the Union’s Venue 1, where you’re to be serenaded by a few of St Andrews’ renowned A Capella groups to get you through a potentially boring morning of queuing. I’ve also heard that the Rector’s Café are giving out free mince pies. Unaccompanied singing and sugar, sounds like the perfect morning to me! The event itself is £35, including Jannettas ice cream, cupcakes and cava. I predict a yummy evening!

3. Party after the Welly dinner

If you didn’t apply for a table or sadly weren’t allocated one at this year’s Welly Ball, have no fear, you still have the chance to party with the dinner guests afterwards for only £20. Imagine all the alcohol and exciting pre-party snacks you could buy with the money you would’ve spent on a three-course meal! Ticket sales are taking place from November 5th to 7th between 13:00 and 17:00 at the Vic, so make sure you get there to avoid missing out on the most comfortable St Andrews ball.

4. Go along to Management Society’s first speaker event

On November 6th Paul Brynsrud is coming to St Andrews to talk to Management Society about his experiences of Mckinsey & Company, an American global management consulting firm. Tickets are £2 for members, £4 for non-members, and can be purchased online at http://www.mngsociety.com/wib/. His talk is scheduled for 17:00, but I’d advise getting to Parliament Hall a good ten minutes before to ensure you get a seat inside its wooden panelled interior.

5. Attend the first student performance at the Byre in almost two years

This week Mermaids is staging Oscar Wilde’s ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’ at the Byre Theatre, a play which follows the melodramatic lives of the English gentry as they bicker about the most trivial of subjects. Performances are on November 6th, 7th and 8th, all starting at 19:30, and you can buy a ticket for £7 at the Byre box office or on the Union website.
