Bubble Trends: Autumn 2014

Anna McAlpine on the autumn trends bubbling up in St Andrews.

For an old university, we are one that really dedicates itself to fashion. That goes not only for our many catwalk shows but also for our ability to sniff out new trends. It only takes a few fashion savvy people to back one trend before every student and their tutor are sporting it. With the changing seasons comes the perfect excuse for a new autumn wardrobe! That being said, here’s a run of the top four trends getting ready to take over the bubble.

  1. Roll necks

Need to know: The humble polo neck. Ever since the 90’s ‘when they got cool’, my love affair with them started, and they have been a staple. Yet, for AW14, it seems that everyone else has come to their senses and fallen back in love too! They are a great basic to stock up on, especially as a layering piece once the real winter weather permeates the sea air. Shops have started to stock them in every form a girl could want… oversized, skinny knit, patterned, textured…and in every colour of the rainbow! This once boring basic is having a moment.

  1. Knee high boot

Need to know: A classic for the St. Andrews student about town, up and down Market Street you can hear people rejoicing and fetching the leather polish as it is FINALLY boot season! (And for all you eager ‘boots and Barbour’s’ in summer types- good news, you won’t look ridiculous anymore!) The knee boot is also being paraded up and down the catwalks this season, so expect a lot on the high street for your perusal. For those of you that don’t want to leave the comfort of the bubble/are too desperate to wait for online delivery, Rogerson on Market Street has a great range of quality boots in this year.

  1. Fur trimmed coats

Need to know: Fur always adds a touch of decadence to your library chic (provided it’s faux of course). This season, fur is being sported around the hoods of parka coats. The fur trimmed coats are set to go big in the bubble- with the rain we’ve had they have already been debuted in hoards. This is a trend incorporates practicality and style (a rare find!), plus it will keep you cosy. However, if you have the option, try and get one that is also fur/ fleece lined, for added warmth.

Where to shop: Superdry

  1. The blanket scarf

Need to know: This is your go to. It pulls any outfit together. It is especially good for the lazy morning lecture look; additionally, if you buy it in a bold print, it will add drama to any basic jeans and t-shirt combination. It looks particularly good in heavy woven wool materials, with autumnal hues and a few checks thrown in for good measure. Top secret: Set aside an afternoon for shopping and take a trip to Balgove estate where you’ll find gorgeous quality woollen blanket scarfs in an array of plaid patterns (and while you’re there, round it off with some afternoon tea to celebrate your fabulous purchase!)
