Five stars! Award-winning! Puppets! Professional! Hookhitch comes to St Andrews.

As part of the collaboration between 2015’s On the Rocks Festival and Mermaids Performing Arts Fund, Hookhitch Theatre Company will be performing their award-winning Fringe show, This Was the World and I was King. Featuring original folk-music, lyrics based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s work, and puppetry throughout, the company will be bringing something new and exciting to the St Andrews theatre scene.

Billed as a ‘folk-musical with puppetry’, This Was the World and I was King got fabulous reviews at the 2013 Fringe Festival: “This is a remarkable little show.” **** (‘Hot Show’ The Scotsman); “Enchanting at every turn… A triumph of originality” ***** (Editor’s Pick ThreeWeeks); “Wonderfully evocative and beautifully produced” **** (Broadway Baby); “An absolute treat; sheer exuberant joy from start to finish” **** (Fourth Wall Mag); “The most beautiful puppetry I have seen this Fringe” (NZ Review).

The company is no stranger to success at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, with their 2014 shows The Despondent Divorcee and Mildred using inventive and exciting uses of space and characters to bring incredible stories to life, and providing some of the most interesting shows I managed to see.

The aim of Hookhitch is for the ‘audience to leave our shows having discovered something new, or having being reminded of something they’d forgotten’. The beauty of their shows allows for just that.

Chances to see theatre like this don’t happen every day in St Andrews, so we would highly recommend swinging by the Barron tonight, tomorrow, or Wednesday to check out the magic of Hookhitch. With reduced prices for students, there really is no excuse not to go.
