Five things to do this week

It’s almost time to BONGO

1. Join On The Rocks

On The Rocks, St Andrews’ student-run arts festival, are opening subcommittee applications this week, and are keen for as many people as possibly to apply to be a part of their team. Regardless of the position you apply for (information about positions and the application process is all available on the festival’s website: www.ontherocksfestival.com), you need to be prepared to work hard and creatively in organising such a highly acclaimed arts festival.

2. Go cray at Crayfish (if you can find a way in…)

On Thursday 2nd of October at the Best Western Scores Hotel, The Scandinavian Society are holding their first event of the academic year, their renowned Crayfish Party! This group of beautiful, fashionable people warn guests that the night will be anything but classy and sophisticated, as their immaculate appearances and behaviour would suggest, but that they should prepare for a messy night of crayfish peeling and countless shots. I’m pretty sure tickets have been sold out, but if you post on the Facebook page, you may get lucky and nab one off a silly person selling theirs in fear of the pretty, fair-haired bunch.

Last year’s Crayfish dinner. It doesn’t look too scary now, does it?

3. Get ready to Bongo

The Bongo Ball is returning to Crail Airfield in just under a few weeks’ time, so prepare to embrace your wild side. If you’re a fresher and unsure what the Bongo Ball is, envision students in black tie with a sexy animal edge, a disused cinema turned venue surrounded by bonfires and tents, and plenty of food and drink. Tickets are being sold on Friday 3rd of October between 10:00 and 16:00 at 14 Murray Place, and the committee are already sure that this year’s ball is going to be a sell-out, so ensure you join the queue as early as possible!

4. Quiz a QC

Law Society has invited Oliver Sells QC to St Andrews on Friday 3rd October to give students an insight into his experiences as a practicing barrister. His talk, entitled ‘Life, the Bar and Everything’, will cover complex criminal cases, his speciality, as well as Human Rights and Extradition Law, other areas he dips into. As per usual the talk will be preceded by a wine reception at 17:45 (I’d say that there were at least two glasses per person at last week’s talk!), and followed by an informal Q&A session and dinner in St Andrews.

5. Party with Kate Kennedy’s men

The must-attend event of any fresher’s calendar, the Kate Kennedy Club’s Opening Ball, is taking place on Saturday 4th October on Lower College Lawn. Guests will be greeted by Highland Pipers and trays of glittering champagne glasses from 20:00, and once inside will be able to enjoy numerous freebies and cocktails at decent prices. Ticket sales have been and gone, but I’m sure if you were to ask around, you’d find a way into the party.
